It’s Never Easy

Filed under: Reflections - Ric @ 7:21 am

Some times, for some people, life is easy. They seem to get what they want, they are always smiling, things go their way. I am not a member of this august group of “Forutne’s Favourites”. Nay nay I say, for I am always harmoniously in balance with the universal ying and yang of fortune and disaster.

…fortune does not so much smile on me, but smirks at me…

Let’s take this week so far for example. Monday I boldly resign without a safety net of a new job. Perilously, I flirt with economic disaster and ruin, but within 3 hours of my resignation, my phone is ringing with the sweet call of the recruiter. Three possible gigs are already in motion. This is good right? I know only too well, however, that fortune does not so much smile on me, but smirks at me.

I knew it was too good to be true on the drive home yesterday. I was happy. I was unstressed. My life was working out. Then came the load knocking sound from the engine of the van. It’s old, and like me, makes noises. Crap, I was going to have to get this fixed, but I didn’t think it was that serious. My wife knew otherwise. “Take it to the garage and get it fixed.” I thought otherwise. I had made arrangements to see a friend and thought it could make just one more trip. “It’s going to drop dead in the middle of the road.” she said. I ignored her.

On my way to my friend’s house the slight knocking became distinctively not slight. It was followed by a cacophony of sounds not unlike the screeching of a banshee. The van rocked and jerked and began to loose power. I pulled off the road into the first parking lot I came too. The parking lot belonged to the very garage my wife had told me to take the van to in the first place. I didn’t listen, but the van did, and Fortune chuckled to himself, pleased with all he had accomplished.
