Nothing to Show

Filed under: Writing - Ric @ 9:10 am

It has been twenty days since I “Fell on my Pen” in the NaNoWriMo. Twenty days since the heady rush of putting a few thousand words a day into a computer file with no particular title. Twenty days and I’ve written virtually nothing.

…the Muse isn’t back from her winter vacation in the islands…

This lack of output on my part is particularly unnerving. The NaNoWriMonauts warn of this phase of the post November blues. Holidays coming on; everyone busy shopping; no time to write. A feeling of uselessness creeps up on you, a sort of post novel depression sets in and suddenly it’s very difficult to work up the get up and go necessary to, for lack of better words, get up and go.

I’ve pretty much scraped the idea from the NaNoWriMo attempt, mind you there is a chunk that would make a pretty good short story. I’ve been trying to come up with something new that I can work through, but it hasn’t shown me what it is yet. I suppose the Muse isn’t back from her winter vacation in the islands yet. I hope she chokes on her margarita.

Did you manage to hit the 50,000 words?
I lost my nano entry from 2004. The document and every copy that I had of it got corrupted somehow, which signaled the end to the zombie satire that I had written. I am not sure if I will ever participate in Nano again. I felt like I was forcing myself to do something that I love and I didn’t like that feeling.

Well, I hope your muse comes back soon. Maybe a litte recreational reading will do the trick.

If you didn’t make the 50,000, at least you made the attempt. Kudos. Love the new design.

A serious writer’s block even coffee cannot cure! 20% of me wanted to participate in NaNoWriMo but 80% of me warned about the usual workload in November and December. Perhaps they would reconsider moving the event to summertime …

I’m disappointed with you, but not, because it sounds like a herculean effort was made, and that HAS to have it’s rewards at some point. You did say you have a short story in there, maybe?

And NaNoBloGoSnowDough (obviously not a writer, here) is only one of interesting blogging challenges to encourage the creative urge …Illustration Friday, Everyday Matters come to mind in the visual arts world…but even though the effort to meet each challengs is fun, it’s not the end-all. It’s meant to be process - and right now, your process is taking it’s own path.

My muse refuses to unpack the Christmas stuff, and so has left the neighbourhood as well….

Fred - didn’t make the 50K.. I came in around 18K. Recreational reading is a good idea, as it is often inspirational.

Jayne - Thanks for the encouragement. I still wish I had made it.

Watson - I hear you about Novemeber. I even took a week off to assist with the writing. Then life came back and swated me in the back of the head. I may plan a “Personal Novel Writing Month” (PeNoWriMo) and give it a go on a better time frame.

Rufus - Oh the truth you speak… I hear ya sister.

p.s. Muse has sent a post card. Says she’ll be home soon :)
