Early Morning Drain

Filed under: Work - Ric @ 7:00 am

Normals are still sleeping. Normals have schedules. Normals start work and end work with routine regularity. How I miss being a normal; sleeping more than 3 hours in a row; not being tied to the corporation every second of the day. I fear however, that normality recedes in the face of progress, like the wild bear, driven by man’s expansion into remote, hidden territories - seldom seen. Normals are being replaced by TechFarmers. Like their agricultural namesakes, work is constant. The beasts of modern computational burden need continuous attention. Systems and Networks must have a constant good shepherd working to recover the one that has left the flock and responds not.

Today began early, before daybreak had started his work and was still in slippers drinking coffee. The clarion call was, as always, the umbilical cord of system management, the cell phone. It pierced through the stillness of the dark hours, shattering dreams and demanding immediate attention.

Service interrupted, service restored. Sleep interrupted, sleeplessness remains. Once you’ve started the work cycle, return to slumber is always rare. So in the deep dark hours before first light, I am left to sit and ponder the costs.

Sleep, so precious that we pay many with.
I have been woken up by a child getting sick on the hour every hour for the last two nights. Coffee doesn’t even dent my tiredness.

    Take Care

Michael, I feel what you’re going through. I’ve had that happen with my own kids too. Hope everyone is doing much better now.
