Who’s the Heavy Now?

Filed under: Work - Ric @ 3:07 pm

I have become death; destroyer of worlds, or so goes the Hindu scripture attributed to Oppenhiemer’s crisis of faith in the Manhatten Project. It has become my mantra for my pending crisis in management. You see I am now in the position of having to address the poor performance issues of one of my staff. I hate this kind of crap and I hate having to be the heavy. Perhaps this is my karma for the transgressions of jobs past.

I have an amazing manager right now, who is fantastic at this. He brings up stuff early, he helps me think of solutions & options, he keeps giving me feedback when I’m not cutting it, and feedback when I am — it’s like having a warm solid barometer, the perfect coach. I love it. Having this kind of support is slowly making me stop seeing stuff as “bad” and “good” — and me that way too. And instead look at it all as one ongoing “getting better at life.” No matter how alarmed or recalcitrant or terrified your employee looks, deep inside they are hoping for help & a light at the end of the tunnel. Sometimes just a solid confident, “I’m here with you. This looks like a mess. What’s our options here? Here’s what’s coming if we can clean this up. Here’s what’s coming if we can’t”, while all along underbuoyed by “You are a good person. I like you. This is just work, let’s fix it.” — works miracles.

You have never left the friary. You are just in the world, where, as the tibetan buddhist monks say, “practice is more difficult.”

Anyway, having this manager is totally changing my beliefs & experiences of what managing can be like. Maybe you’ll be like that for your guys.

Wise and positive advice, as always. Thanks bunches.

Ohhhhhhh, it IS karma time, isn’t it? First things first - get the guy’s blog URL; then find out the real reasons behind the poor performance. Hopefully, that will clarify the situation for everyone, and that person will have identified the problem and the solution all by themselves.

    Bonne chance!

I bet the ‘beloved’ is hiring. Would that be a good fit or good entertainment?

Rufus: I’ll look, but somehow I think that would only work with me :)

Scott: That has real possibilities, but I fear my karma would get worse. Incidently I’m interviewing the beloved one’s last full time network guy. He has only been there 5 months and already he wants to leave, and I just happen to have an opening. :)
