Luck Be a Lady

Filed under: Almanac - Ric @ 7:46 am

It’s the birthday of Damon Runyon, born in Manhattan, Kansas (1884). He was a newspaper man. He moved to New York in 1910. The musical Guys and Dolls was based on his stories. He said, “The race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, but that’s the way to bet.”

Because I’ve never read any of Runyon’s work, he’s really only a name to me. But if his writing gave rise to ‘Guys and Dolls,’ he must have been a good wordsmith. I’ve heard the play described as the greatest musical ever and I don’t think that I would argue with that.
